GeekLimit Branding

GeekLimit logoOK, so I've been fighting to find a certain something that will really identify GeekLimit to the blogosphere.  BoingBoing has its jackhammer girl, del.icio.us has its boxes, flickr has its pink 'r', etc..  I made a prototype logo (seen here), but it's relatively uninspired.  I'm still working on logos, T-shirts, etc.

However, while browsing the popular links over at del.icio.us, I can say with absolute certainty that GeekLimit now officially has a theme song.  The masterpiece?  Code Monkey by Jonathan Coulton.

Congrats Jonathan on a very well-done, Geekery-inspired tune.

How about you other Geeks? Stumbled across any real-world/geek culture mashups or original works like 'Code Monkey'?  Let's hear ya.

  1. I know there’s one out there that has lyrics to the tune of ‘Loser’ by Beck, I can’t find it though… :-(

  2. You can’t beat “Hey hey 16k“.

I got an A-level in graphics design and art. I can also throw some photoshop/illustrator skills if you are interested in using them…

  3. Or open up a logo competition..?

  4. I do love that Code Monkey song :)

I’m not a huge fan of that logo, its not web2.0 enough for me, i think we should aim to predict web3.0.0 and start that trend :)

  5. a logo competition sounds like fun

  6. Anyway, should’nt it be 256?

  7. I figured you’re allowed 0-255. Technically, it’s 256 bits, but the max address is 255. I figured I’d go for the extra geekery.

  8. Technocrat, wtf are you talking about? “it’s 256 bits, but the max address is 255.”
An 8-bit number can take on 256 distinct values. Usually you are using an unsigned notation which would give you the values 0-255. A 256-bit value can take on about 1.15 * 1077 distinct values, far more precision than you need. And whoever talked about addresses? Usually you would prefer a 16-bit addressing space, which gives you 65536 different values.
But 255 is a cool number, since it has all eight bits set.

  9. hmm, I should have said ‘ip address’, not address. I didn’t think of it as 256-bit addressing anyway…

When I made the logo, I had been working on drawing up a network diagram for one of my sites all day…I was in IP Address mode.

I’m not sure how I worked bits in there, but I think somewhere I started talking about ip addressing and allocated address space in the same sentence… A case of thinking faster than I typed…

So to answer your question, I know exactly what I was thinking, but have no idea ‘wtf’ I was typing… :-D

  10. As soon as you say 255 i think addressing, but in 8 bit assembly, probebly one of the geekiest langauges ever.

Obviously everything is different depending on the complexitly – 8, 16, 32, 64 bit etc, a logo should be something more visual, that stands out and shouts to the right people, you dont see anyone complaining about the pink r in flickr.

the logo isnt doing anything… it needs to reach out and grab you. since you’ve come up with what looks like a road sign, how about something more relating to a ‘crosswalk’ sign. for example, have a person sitting at a computer hunched over with crosswalk lines next to it..

  12. yeah, jus something I threw out there to just get the creative process going. We might have a logo contest…I have to think up a good prize though… :-)

  13. What about something like this?

Just something i threw together in ilustrator today (and then it promptly crashed and did’nt save it!)….

    Grrrrr.

  14. I had an idea tonight for a logo for you guys. I hope this is something that you might consider:
