Next Gen Consoles
Gaming, Geeky, Hardware May 9th, 2006
So it’s E3 again, every gamer looks forward to all the announcements, new games and technologies.
This is the first year that I'm not impressed by what I have seen at E3, the next gen consoles are a joke in my opinion.
Both the Xbox360 and PS3 are hugely disappointing, the graphics are only slightly improved over the older versions. And the cost of gaming with these new consoles is going to be just as, if not more expensive than PC gaming.
Dan has been planning to make his gaming PC for about $1000 without a screen… You can get a good gaming pc, not cutting edge, but something that provides just as good graphics as the Xbox360.
The cost of an Xbox360 is about $500, plus you need a HDTV, otherwise you might as well stick with the old Xbox, HDTV are around $1000, so its looking at about the same price as a gaming pc, then add $50 for Xbox live along with your broadband connection makes online gaming more expensive than pc gaming…
Oh and then you have to buy the games, check out steam on the PC, most games are about $20, most Xbox360 games are $50-60 you can buy the whole valve catalogue for $70 which is at least 10 high quality games.
Quite frankly console gaming is getting crazy, there isn’t enough creativity in the industry to make the cost viable, nearly every game on the new consoles is a sequel or a 2007 version of an older game from the previous generation.
Just do the maths, either get yourself an overpriced flash Xbox or PS2 with slightly improved graphics and an expensive TV with 2-3 years life expectancy or a gaming PC that will not only do games but everything else a PC does as well as the internet, IM and VOIP calls, all without paying service charges like Xbox live.
And don’t worry about the old saying that your PC will be out of date in a month, my pc is 3 years old and still plays pretty much every game you can throw at it, I think F.E.A.R is the first game it has struggled with.
Nintendo are the odd-one-out here, The Wii looks to be something a little more revolutionary (see what I did there
), with an interesting and different controller, little improvement on graphics over the Gamecube and a focus on great gaming rather than MS and Sony’s efforts to make a home entertainment centre that not only plays games but does films too (is there anything else they do?), at only $250 as well!
I cant wait to see what Nintendo have planned, Sony already like what they are doing as they have copied the Wii controllers tilt and motion sensing in their new dual shock 3 (minus force feedback due to the law suit).

I am an XBox360 owner and a long time champ of PC gaming too.
The PS3 does look good and will probably wipe the floor with the 360 and Wii in the long run though.
I like consoles now as they “just work” and I don’t have to worry about having the latest graphics card installed or buggy DirectX installations etc etc etc…
Then again, the last PC game I bought was Quake 2!

I just unplugged my XBox when my XBox Live subscription ended… the games just aren’t doing it for me, and FPS’s are too difficult to control on a console controller, IMHO. It’ll be on eBay with my iPod mini soon… (I’d rather have a cheaper mp3 player, since I don’t use iTunes anyway)
I plugged in a Sega Master Console, and will be posting about my sub-$1000 console-killer gaming PC soon.
Action Fighter rocks!

As much as everyone hates Vista because of its DRM, it is going to make PC gaming a much nicer experience, running much like the Xbox where you insert the DVD and play without installing anything.
And DirectX10 should even out the playing field and force graphics cards to either be completely compatible or not at all.

The graphical difference isn’t that surprising, especially when you compare recent ps2 titles with the first ps3 titles. Developers always take a while to learn to develop on each machine, for a fair comparison you really need to look at the first generation of ps2 games, when developers were at the same level of experience with the system.

I quite agree with the above article … it’s getting too costly.
But what I want is PS3. I’ll wait few months and then probably if my budget allows, I’ll go for one. One major thing that I want this particular console is the support of LINUX. If I really see good reviews on PS3, I am getting one and converting it to my entertainment console (games+video+audio+more). And compared to Xbox 360, it should be cheaper.

I only got myself a PS2 because I wanted GT3, the next GT will be hard to resist, but the costs are spiralling.
I also heard today that the next GTA will be xbox360 only, seems like a pretty stupid thing to do, GTA:SA was huge, and on every games platform, rockstar jsut lost 66% of its market!!

Just read the following:
The PlayStation 3 will be launched on 11th of November in Japan and on the 17th of November in Australia, Europe, U.S. and other regions. There will be two versions of the console available, one is equipped with 20GB hard disk drive – it will have recommended price of $499 (ˆ499), another features 60GB hard drive – it will be offered for $599 (ˆ), which makes the PlayStation 3 the world’s most expensive game console.
Guess I’ll have to wait for more than just few months
